Northern third of the Northern Territory — tropical, monsoonal, wild. Darwin is closer to Jakarta than Sydney. Around it: Kakadu (UNESCO for both nature and culture), Litchfield, Katherine, Arnhem Land.
Don’t miss: Ubirr at sunset (rock art + Nadab floodplain view), dawn cruise on Yellow Water billabong, swim at Litchfield’s Wangi or Florence Falls, Mindil Beach Sunset Markets (Thu/Sun in the dry), float at Bitter Springs.

- Wet: Nov–Apr. Most outback roads in Kakadu closed. Spectacular thunderstorms, but limited access

Darwin
Twice flattened in the 20th c. — Japanese bombing 1942 and Cyclone Tracy 1974. Most ethnically diverse Australian city.

Kakadu
Kakadu — Australia’s largest NP (19,800 km², size of Slovenia). UNESCO for both natural and cultural significance. Country of the Bininj/Mungguy people, 65,000+ years.
- Ubirr — rock art galleries 20,000+ yrs old. Climb at sunset over the Nadab floodplain — one of the great views
- Nourlangie / Burrungkuy — more rock art
- Yellow Water billabong at Cooinda — wetland, crocs, mad bird life. Dawn cruise
- Jim Jim & Twin Falls — 4WD only access. Closed wet
- Maguk — gorgeous swimming hole
- Gunlom — natural infinity pool (Crocodile Dundee opening sequence)
3 days minimum, ideally 4–5. Plus 3hr drive each way from Darwin.
Watch for salties — signs are not for show.
Arnhem Land
Arnhem Land — Aboriginal-owned, closed without a permit. Some of the best rock art and most intact Indigenous culture in the country.

- Maningrida — bark painting capital. Permit via art centre

3hr S of Darwin. Gateway to Nitmiluk NP — 13 sandstone gorges.
- Gorge cruises or canoe yourself (best way)
- Edith Falls / Leliyn — pool tiers
- Mataranka thermal pools + Bitter Springs — palm-fringed warm water, lazy float

- Darwin → Kakadu (Jabiru): 3hr via Arnhem Hwy. Sealed
- Inside Kakadu: many sites (Jim Jim, Twin Falls, Gunlom) need 4WD
- Darwin → Litchfield: 1.5hr
- Darwin → Katherine: 3hr down Stuart Hwy
- Darwin → Alice: 2 days drive or fly 2hr
- Darwin → Kununurra (Kimberley): 1 day W on Victoria Hwy. Quarantine at border
